Sandsculpting Championship

Fort Myers Beach is host to the 25th Anniversary World Sand Sculpting Championship. We arrived early - before they were officially open - and watched while they got the sculptures ready for the day.

Another use for Aqua Net Hair Spray! The sand is mixed with water and glue to make the sculptures and each day they are sprayed with Aqua Net Hair Spray to keep them together.

The area around the displays are carefully raked.

This was one of my favorites - and looks even better in person.

Crazy faces! The detail is amazing. I'm glad we arrived extra early as the weather on the beach warmed up quickly and there were a lot more people than in past years.

The roads are congested and forget the stores! Everyone is saying that "season" arrived 6 weeks early this year. We are here through next week opening the condo and getting it ready to rent. I can't believe I actually have Internet - I expected to have to go to McDonalds or the local library.

Sand Sculpturing Festival

This past weekend was the Annual Sand Sculpturing Festival on Fort Myers Beach. Each contestant had from Friday to Sunday to create their masterpiece from sand.

Thursday, before they started on their individual sculptures, they worked on a group project that included all the names of the sponsors.

This piece was titled "Food Fight!" I thought it was an interesting perspective with the hotels in the background.

This picture of the winning entry was taken on Saturday morning.

And this one was taken on Monday morning after the contest was over.

There were not as many competitors this year as last and for the first time in the history of the festival, they charged a daily $5 admission to the spectators. Next year, I think we will wait until Monday morning to attend - when even the parking is free.

Sandsculpting Festival

On Friday Bill and I headed to Fort Myers Beach for the 22nd Annual American Sandsculpting Championship Festival. It was a picture perfect day; we were able to park very close for only $5 and the crowds had not yet arrived.

Armed with water and my camera, we headed out to see the sculptures. The artists have only a couple of days to design and create their masterpieces with sand, water, lots of hard work and imagination. It was hot on the beach. I felt especially sorry for the gal that usually did ice sculptures.

Some of the artists enjoyed visiting, others were too busy concentrating on their exhibit.

I saw this license plate in the parking lot and couldn't resist taking a picture.

Heading down to the water, we could see that the kids had been inspired by the festival. This young boy has my vote for next year's competition!
Heading back to the car we made one last stop.
